The Moscow Mules

The Moscow Mules (est. 2017) are a three-piece string band from Moscow, ID, who play an eclectic mix of high-energy, dance-friendly acoustic music. A night with the Mules spans the spectrum from original bluegrass to contemporary jamgrass to rapid-fire, banjo-fueled arrangements of Grateful Dead tunes and a wide variety of 60s-80s rock songs. The Mule-team consists of Sean Long (guitar, vocals), Paul Hohenlohe (banjo, dobro, vocals), and Elias Paxton (upright bass, vocals). The Mules are two-time winners of the Moscow Rendezvous In the Park showcase (2018, 2021) and won the vote for “Best of Local Bands” in the 2023 University of Idaho “Best of Moscow” series. The Mules have headlined the Moscow Bluegrass Festival and the Valley Bluegrass Festival in Orofino, ID. The Mules recorded the album The COVID Tapes in 2024.

The Road Apples

The Road Apples (est. 2012) are a trio from Reno, NV, that play harmony-rich folk, bluegrass, and old-time music. Featuring the interweaving voices of Sean Long, Chelsey Robison, and Ryan Sharrer, and a stripped-down-yet-intricate accompaniment of banjo and guitar, an evening with The Road Apples will take you on a serene Americana journey. The Road Apples recorded the album Mule Crossing in 2013.

6 Mule Pile-up

6 Mule Pile-up (2010-2015) was a Reno-based bluegrass band, with a lineup of: Sean Long (guitar, vocals), Ryan Sharrer (banjo, vocals), Annie Caires (fiddle), Andy Knust (upright bass), Chelsey Robison (vocals), and Chris Garner (dobro, vocals). They played all over the Reno region, and recorded one live album: Live at Bartley Ranch (2014).

Prospect Crossing

Prospect Crossing (2006-2010), based out of Princeton, New Jersey, was a bluegrass band that featured the phenomenal Brittany Haas, who has gone on to become one of the most influential fiddle players in the country. She currently plays with The Punch Brothers and Hawktail, but she has been a past member of Crooked Still, The David Rawlings Machine, and many others. Prospect Crossing also featured renowned multi-instrumentalist Paul Prestopino (a touring member of Peter, Paul, and Mary, The Greenbriar Boys, and the Chad Mitchell Trio), Sean Long on guitar and vocals, Richard Smith (author of Can’t You Hear Me Callin’, the biography of Bill Monroe) on mandolin and vocals, Theo Beers on upright bass, and Dave Haneman on upright bass. Prospect Crossing recorded one live album: Live at the Alchemist and Barrister (2009).

The Chelseas

The Chelseas: In 2019-2020, Sean performed as a member of The Chelseas, an acoustic folk band from Moscow, Idaho, that features stunning vocal harmonies.

Taproot Bluegrass

Taproot bluegrass (2015-2016) was a Moscow, Idaho-based bluegrass project that featured Sean Long (guitar, vocals), Paul Hohenlohe (dobro, vocals), Sam Schumacher (banjo), Nick Brunsfeld (guitar, vocals), and Ariel Hoffman (upright bass). Taproot Bluegrass won the Moscow Rendezvous In the Park showcase at the Kenworthy theater in 2016.
