Bio
Sean Long
Sean is an Idaho-born singer and guitarist that has been an active performer since 2002. He won the 2005 Wyoming State Flatpick Guitar Championship, and even competed at the prestigious National Flatpick Guitar Championship in Winfield, Kansas. Sean is a seasoned stage performer with over 250 live shows under his belt, from Idaho to Nevada to New Jersey.
Currently based in Reno, Nevada, Sean does solo performances and plays with two bands: The Moscow Mules (est. 2017) and The Road Apples (est. 2012). Sean has strong roots in bluegrass and folk music, but he also loves to twist a wide variety of rock songs into unique acoustic versions (the Grateful Dead and Pink Floyd are among his favorites, but he's been known to venture deeper...Earth, Wind & Fire, Bonnie Tyler, The Who, Aretha Franklin...if it can be 'bluegrassized' he'll do it!).
Sean has been a founding member of four bands: the New Jersey-based Prospect Crossing (2006-2010), which featured fiddle phenom Brittany Haas (currently playing with The Punch Brothers), 6 Mule Pile-up (2010-2015), a lively bluegrass band that played all over northern Nevada, The Road Apples (2012-2015, 2025-present), a harmony-driven Americana trio based out of Reno, and The Moscow Mules (2017-present), a trio from northern Idaho that specializes in breakneck-speed, bluegrass-inspired versions of 60s-80s rock songs.
Sean has recorded three solo albums: Live at the Laundromat (2004), 5th Street Blues (2006), Jersey Blues (2010), and four albums with bands: Live at the Alchemist and Barrister (2009) with Prospect Crossing, Mule Crossing (2013) with The Road Apples, Live at Bartley Ranch (2014) with 6 Mule Pile-up, and The COVID Tapes (2024) with The Moscow Mules. Please visit the Music page for some samples, and please visit Sean's SoundCloud page to listen to these albums.
As his day job, Sean has been a geology professor for the past 16 years (first at the University of Nevada, Reno, and currently at Washington State University). Sean's academic research aims to understand how Earth's largest mountain systems are constructed and how they evolve over time. He has spent approximately half of his research career working in the Himalayas and the other half in the Western USA. Please see his research website for more details.
